On the Poet’s Trail with National Geographic
“Journey along Basho’s Trail with writer Howard Norman as he shares his daily observations in this travelogue.” This travelogue by Howard Norman is an interesting, good read, with field notes and beautiful photographs by Michael Yamashita.
Last fall, novelist Howard Norman followed the journey made by 17th-century Japanese poet and writer Matsuo Basho and immortalized in his Oku no Hosomichi–Narrow Road to a Far Province. Norman’s exploration of Basho’s life and the reasons this literary giant undertook his journey are in this month’s issue of National Geographic. On his own travels Norman found an iconic, and often ironic, melding of the old Japan of teahouses, temples, and pilgrims with a new one of cell phones, sweatshirts, and Godzilla.
