Holiday Libations

I don’t get to buy any liquors very often, but I do enjoy a good liquor every now and then, especially on special occasions and holidays.  Kind of like a smoking a good cigar, if not enjoyed often, it can be a singular pleasure.

Linda bought a bottle of eggnog this afternoon, and earlier Lane joked that it wasn’t really eggnog without rum.  A few minutes later, it clicked in my slow brain what he had said, and I realized that he’s absolutely right.  So I ran to one of the liquor stores in town, and bought a bottle of Bacardi 8 - not a great rum, but certainly a good rum.  As the distiller describes it - “Bacardi 8 is aged for more than eight years in carefully selected oak barrels.  After aging it is blended to perfection featuring notes of prunes, apricots, nutmeg and vanilla over a clean woody background of oak.  It’s taste is smooth, rich and very full with a long and expansive finish.”  A near perfect rum for eggnog.

Since Linda was not going to be home this evening, I pulled out a couple of my mom’s Waterford Crystal tumblers, and mixed up some eggnog for Lane and I.  I’d hoped he’d notice the gesture and sit with me for a bit and chat, but I guess he has other things on his mind.  I did tell him not to lose the glass in his room though.  As I’m sitting here by myself sipping my eggnog in my cut-crystal tumbler, I’m thinking of Travis and Joshua in Florida, and wondering what they’re doing.

Also, again since I don’t get to enjoy it all that often, I bought a bottle of Chivas Regal 12 year old scotch.  Again, not a great scotch, but it is certainly a good one.  I generally prefer a good 15 year old or better single malt, but this was the best the budget would allow, since I was buying rum as well.

All in all, Bacardi 8 and Chivas Regal 12 make for decent holiday libations.  Now, if only I was back in the islands for the holidays, where it would be warm enough for me to sit outside, and enjoy my scotch with a good pipe or cigar.  Perhaps I’ll be able to do that again someday.
