Movies to see

I don’t get out much, but I do enjoy going to movies, at least if I can go to the theater when it’s not crowded. Here are some movies that I’d like to see:

The Bourne Ultimatum
Still having no memory of who he really is or where he’s from, superspy Jason Bourne (Matt Damon)The goes on one last adventure to find himself … literally. With some help from his former co-conspirator, Nicky (Julia Stiles), Bourne must continue to evade CIA director Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) and spar with a mysterious figure from his past — the deadly Paz (Edgar Ramirez), who was trained in the same deadly secret program as Bourne.

I think this is the movie that I am most excited about it’s being released. I am a big fan of these “Bourne” trilogy, both the books and the movies (The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004)). I think that it’s time for me to finally re-read the Bourne trilogy by Robert Ludlum. I wonder if the new movie (”… Ultimatum) will fit at all with the plot in the book. The second movie, “…Supremacy”, strayed so far from the original plot that the only relation to it was the name. I enjoyed it anyway.

Hairspray
An adaptation of the hit Broadway play, which was in turn inspired by the 1988 John Waters classic, chubby teenager Tracy Turnblad (Nicole Blonsky) will do anything to get on Corny Collins’ (James Marsden) local Baltimore dance show, even if it means defying her parents Edna (John Travolta in drag) and Wilbur (Christopher Walken). And when she eventually makes it on the rock ‘n’ roll progam, she surprisingly becomes the hit of the city, much to the consternation of the previous dancing queen, Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) who will do anything to dethrone her competition.

I’m excited about this one also. Linda and I together, in the same theater, at the same time, to see the same movie? It’s-a-miracle!,

Goya’s Ghosts (I could not find an English version of the “official website”, so the link is to IMDB.com)
In 1792, the Catholic Church brings back the Inquisition and a poor artist’s model (Natalie Portman) is unfairly imprisoned and tortured. Twenty years later, that artist, Goya (Stellan Skarsgard), is haunted by the memory of what happened to his young friend only to be confronted by her when she is released from her hellish imprisonment.

Across the Universe
This musical based on the songs of the Beatles finds a young woman named Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) falling for a young British radical named Jude (Jim Sturgess). The young lovers get caught up in the ’60s counterculture and have their relationship tested to the limits while struggling to hold on to their ideals. Directed by Julie Taymor (Frida and the Broadway version of The Lion King).

Joshua
Brad and Abby Cairn (Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga) are an upscale married couple living what they think is the good life in their Manhattan home with their “perfect” son, Joshua (Jacob Kogan). However, when Abby gives birth to a daughter, Joshua’s evil tendencies start to become apparent.

Looks creepy. No, this is not a movie about, or by, my son Joshua. My Josh is the youngest brother, not the oldest. And besides, aside from what he might like me to think, he doesn’t have an evil molecule in his body.

Transformers
Remember the mid-’80s cartoon show about two dueling groups of robots — the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons — with the power to transform into cars, jets, helicopters, motorcycles, and such? Well, they’re coming to the big screen in this live-action adaptation.

Originally a kids’ cartoon, but based on the preview I don’t think it would be a good movie for the little ‘uns. Probably my only SciFi fix for the summer.

Sicko
Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore aims his camera at the diseased American health care industry for his latest documentary.

Macbeth
Shakespeare’s classic play is transported in modern-day Melbourne, Australia where a gangster named Macbeth (Sam Worthington) is fiercely loyal to his crime boss Duncan (Gary Sweet). However, the one who gets rewarded is Duncan’s lazy son Malcolm (Matt Doran). So, in a vicious double-cross instigated by Lady Macbeth (Victoria Hill), Macbeth kills Duncan and tries to assume control of the entire crime family, mainly by killing off every rival he has.

This one is a definite maybe. As much as I enjoy watching various versions of Shakespeare’s tales, based on the preview, this may be a wait-for-DVD movie.

1408
Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a guy who stubbornly refuses to believe in the paranormal. In fact, he’s written two best-selling books debunking myths and rumored hauntings. His latest subject is a hotel room in New York City with a dark and infamous past. However, in his determination to prove that 1408 is not haunted, Enslin may just stumble into a real-life ghost story.

Good old-fashioned ghost story? Looks pretty weird.

Beyond Hatred
This documentary covers the aftermath after the senseless slaying of Francois Chenu on Sept. 13, 2002. After admitting his homosexuality, Chenu was beaten to death by three skinheads who were quickly caught by police and put on trial. However, rather than seek revenge for the killing, Chenu’s parents instead sought to understand the men who killed their boy and uncover what could have led them to commit an act of such brutality.

Although this looks to be very interesting, I will probably wait for the DVD release. Also, being a limited release, it might not even show near me.

Becoming Jane
Author Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) eventually became famous for writing epic novels like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, but as a young woman in the 18th century writing was not a respectible (sic) goal for a young woman. With the entire world telling her she can’t achieve her dreams, Jane meets falls in love with a charming rogue, Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), who inspires her to write the books generations have come to know and love.

I think that’s enough for now. I know that there are other movies that I want to see, but if I see those that I’ve listed above, that will be as many movies that I’ve seen in the theater as I’ve seen during the past several years. Like I said, I don’t get out much.
